Hi @Joymoo

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue—it’s understandably frustrating when your HP Envy 4500 keeps showing “update in progress” and blocks all printing. This message usually indicates a firmware update that’s stalled or failed, and the printer is stuck in a loop waiting for it to complete.

Let’s walk through a recovery path to help clear the update and restore printing.

Step-by-Step Recovery for “Update in Progress” Loop

1. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

This helps clear the update queue:

  • Power off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds while unplugged.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power on and check if the message clears.

2. Check for Firmware Update via HP Smart App (iOS)

  • Open the HP Smart app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap your printer → go to Advanced Settings.
  • Navigate to Tools > Printer Updates.
  • If an update is listed, tap Check Now or Install.
  • If it hangs again, proceed to the next step.

3. Update Firmware via HP Software Utility (Mac or PC)

If you have access to a computer:

  • Visit: HP Envy 4500 Firmware & Drivers
  • Download the Firmware Update Utility.
  • Connect the printer via USB and run the update tool.
  • Follow on-screen instructions to complete the update manually.

4. Clear Print Queue on iOS

  • Open the HP Smart app.
  • Cancel any stuck print jobs.
  • Restart your iOS device and retry printing.

5. Factory Reset the Printer (If Needed)

If nothing clears the update loop:

  • On the printer’s control panel, press Home > Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm and wait for the printer to reboot.
  • Reconnect to Wi-Fi and re-add it to your devices.

Let me know how your printer responds after these steps—I’ll guide you further if needed.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
