Printer Cartridges

I have an OfficeJet 8022 and recently replaced the black ink cartridge.  There are spots for colour cartridges as well, but since I only ever print in black, that was the only one I purchased and refilled.  Now it won't print anything as there are missing cartridges (already recycled).

 

Does the printer need all four cartridges to work properly?  That seems like an incredible waste of money.  Any help is appreciated!

Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. Some ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature.
