My new HP laptop recognizes my old Canon inkjet but I cannot print. I receive a default error message. For some reason I cannot hook up to wifi. I've tried many things to solve the problem. HP is not helpful.

@Tallulah10, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding a printer connection issue!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand how frustrating it can be when things don't work as expected. Let’s try a few steps to resolve your issues with printing and Wi-Fi connectivity. Please follow the instructions below carefully:
1. Printer Not Printing:
It seems that the printer is recognized, but printing is not going through. Let’s address this step by step:
Check Printer Status:
- Go to Devices and Printers (Search for this in the Windows start menu).
- Right-click on your Canon printer and select See what's printing.
- Ensure that there are no print jobs stuck in the queue. If there are, cancel or clear them.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Visit the official Canon support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest driver for your printer.
- Install the new drivers and restart your computer.
- Check if the issue is resolved.
Set Printer as Default:
- In Devices and Printers, right-click your Canon printer and select Set as default printer. This ensures it’s the primary printer for all print jobs.
Check Printer Connectivity:
- If you’re using a wired connection, ensure the USB cable is properly connected.
- If you’re using wireless printing, make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your laptop.
2. Wi-Fi Connection Issues:
It’s important to ensure that your laptop is correctly connected to the network. Here are some steps to follow:
Restart Your Router:
- Sometimes, simply restarting the router can solve connectivity issues. Unplug the router, wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi:
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.
- Select your network and click Forget.
- Then, reconnect to the Wi-Fi network by selecting it again and entering the password.

Update Wi-Fi Drivers:
- Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select Device Manager).
- Expand the Network adapters section, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Run Network Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Internet Connections.
- Run the troubleshooter to detect and resolve any issues automatically.
3. Reset Network Settings (if the issue persists):
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Scroll down and click on Network reset. This will reinstall network adapters and set them to their default settings.
Let me know if it helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
