HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer

Hi there,

My name is Tim. My HP Officejet Pro 8620 printer says "Printer Failure: There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on...". However, I've tried the following to no avail. My only issue is with the Yellow ink cartridge. It reads my empty cartridge, but not my new cartridges, all of which are from HP. Please help!

1. turning off and on printer.

2. Unplugging Power cable.

3. Checking contact pins for ink cartridge and printer housing.

4. Cleaned cartridge and pins.

5. Purchased 3 different ink cartridges.

Hi @TimFloresPhoto,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you are facing an issue with your Printer that has a printer failure error.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to further troubleshoot.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!

Hi Irwin6,

Thanks for your time and support!

1. Am I supposed to close the cover / door at any point during these steps?

2. As for Step A. 5:

Am I supposed to wait any amount of time in between inserting all of the cartridges and then removing all the cartridges or is it as described, just put them in and then immediately remove them?

Unfortunately, none of the provided steps worked (A, B, and I'm assuming C). When reinstalling the old yellow ink cartridge, the printer display will work again, allowing me to sift through the display settings without the warning message being the only thing it will display, but if trying to print or change "major" settings, it says the ink is low and needs to be replaced first. When replacing with new HP yellow ink, the display does not permit any sifting through settings or anything other than displaying the aforementioned error message. Meaning, the printer works, but just isn't reading the NEW yellow ink cartridge, but does read the OLD and depleted yellow ink cartridge.
