HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g

I am getting a message on my printer: "Printer Failure.  There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off then on. If problem persists, contact HP."

 

I put new ink cartridges in (not HP). I have done the suggested power off and on, the power reset, and the printer carriage reset (three times) to no avail. I cannot do the printer reset because the error message does not allow me to return to the Home screen on the printer.

 

What should I try now?
