Hi @Mary60B,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding error code on your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Power Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for at least 2 minutes.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on.
  4. Check if the error disappears.

Check for Paper Jams

Even if you don’t see a jam, check all areas:

  • Open the ink cartridge door and look for paper bits.
  • Remove the rear access panel and check for obstructions.
  • Inspect and gently roll the paper feed rollers to make sure they move freely.

Reseat and Clean the Ink Cartridges

  1. Open the printer and remove all ink cartridges.
  2. Use a lint-free cloth to gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges.
  3. Reinsert them firmly and close the door.
  4. Restart the printer.

Reset the Printhead

  1. Remove the ink cartridges.
  2. Lift the printhead latch and gently remove the printhead.
  3. Wipe the printhead contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  4. Reseat the printhead, lock it in place, and reinstall the cartridges.
  5. Restart the printer and check if the error is gone.

Update Printer Firmware

  1. Go to HP’s support site.
  2. Download and install any firmware updates for your printer.

Perform a Factory Reset

  1. On the printer touchscreen, go to:
    • Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults
  2. Select Restore Factory Defaults and restart the printer.

Let me know how it goes.

Thank you but I cannot remove the ink cartridges unless I unscrew the cover and take it off.

Hi @Mary60B,

Thank you for the response,

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 printer is not letting you remove the ink cartridges without unscrewing the cover, try these steps:

1. Power Cycle the Printer (To Reset the Carriage)

  1. Turn on the printer if it’s not already on.
  2. Unplug the power cord while the printer is on.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.
  5. Open the cartridge access door—the ink carriage should move to the center, allowing you to remove the cartridges.

2. Manually Move the Ink Carriage

If the ink carriage does not move automatically:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the cartridge access door.
  3. Gently move the ink carriage to the center using your fingers.
  4. Remove the cartridges.

3. If the Cover Is Blocking Access

If the cartridge access door is stuck:

  • Ensure that the printer is on before opening the door.
  • Do NOT unscrew anything yet—HP printers are designed to allow cartridge replacement without taking them apart.

4. Reset the Printer

If the printer still won’t let you remove the cartridges, try a full reset:

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect all cables.
  2. Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cable and turn the printer back on.
  4. Try opening the cartridge door again.

Let me know if the issue persists or if you see an error message! 😊
