@NRH77,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A "Printer Failure" message on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 can be caused by a hardware issue, a firmware glitch, or a cartridge-related problem. Try these steps to fix it.

Reset the Printer

  • With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Unplug the other end of the cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip).
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.

Check for Jammed or Stuck Cartridges

  • Open the printer cover and inspect the printhead and cartridge area.
  • If there’s visible ink or paper debris, clean it carefully.
  • Make sure the cartridges are properly seated.

Clean the Printhead

If the failure is cartridge-related, try cleaning the printhead:

  • Remove all ink cartridges.
  • Lift the printhead latch and carefully remove the printhead.
  • Gently wipe the electrical contacts on the printhead and printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water.
  • Let it dry for a few minutes, then reinstall the printhead and cartridges.

Update the Firmware

  • Go to HP’s support website, download the latest firmware for your printer, and install it.
  • You can also update firmware via the HP Smart app or printer's control panel (if accessible).

Check for Internal Hardware Issues

  • Press Back four times on the control panel to open the hidden support menu.
  • Run the Printer Report or Diagnostics Test.
  • If you see an “ink system failure” message, there may be an issue with the ink delivery system.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset

This resets all printer settings but may clear the error:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Hold the "Back" and "OK" buttons (or try tapping "Back" four times) while turning it back on.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to reset the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
