HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Microsoft Windows 11

I have two Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printers that were printing beautifully only to suddenly locked me out with the error message “Printer Failure: There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Please turn the printer and then on again. If problem continues contact Hp support.”
I’ve tried everything I can think of or find online so far: new Hp brand ink cartridges, cleaning the printheads… They won’t let me past the error message to do any system resetting, and they won’t connect to the computer network either. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
it is both printers, so I feel like it’s got to be something I’m doing wrong—but what?!

Hi @Yinderson,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how frustrating it is to have both of your printers suddenly stop working, especially when they were printing fine before. Since it’s happening to both printers, it does seem like a common factor might be causing this. Let’s go through some steps to troubleshoot the issue.

First, a few questions to narrow it down:

  • Did the issue occur after a specific event (e.g., a firmware update, power outage, or refilling ink)?
  • Are the printers displaying the same exact error message at the same time?
  • Have you tried plugging the printers into a different power outlet without a surge protector?

Troubleshooting Steps:

Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Disconnect any USB/Ethernet cables.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes, then plug it directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip).
  • Turn it back on and check if the error persists.

Check the Ink System

  • Since you've already replaced the ink cartridges, try removing them again.
  • While the cartridges are out, clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and the printhead with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert the cartridges and check if the message clears.

Check for Firmware Issues

  • Some OfficeJet printers have had firmware updates that can trigger issues. Since you have two affected printers, try checking HP’s firmware rollback page to see if there are updates causing this issue.
  • If the printers are still somewhat responsive, try updating them via HP’s support page.

Since both printers are affected, something environmental (like firmware, power supply, or network changes) could be the cause. Let me know what happens after these steps, and I’ll be happy to assist further!

Take care and have a good day.
