Hello. I have a reliable HP Officejet Pro 8600. I replaced 2 color cartridges today in response to an alert.
I have never had an issue with replacing printer cartridges. I am seeing a Printer Failure message: There is a problem with the printer or ink systems. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP.
I have tried the suggestions posted, but still am receiving the same Printer Failure alert.
can someone please help me?

Hi @CDMcGrady,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I can imagine how frustrating it must be for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, a printer that’s always been reliable, suddenly throws a “Printer Failure: There is a problem with the printer or ink system” message right after a cartridge change. You’ve done everything right, and yet it feels like the printer is letting you down.
Let’s walk through the most effective steps to resolve this issue.
Step-by-Step Fix
1. Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug it from the wall and wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
2. Check Printer Level
- Place a small round object (like a marble) on top of the printer.
- If it rolls in any direction other than back and left, the printer may not be level.
- Adjust the surface or printer feet until it’s stable.
3. Inspect and Reseat Cartridges
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Remove all cartridges and inspect them for damage or leaks.
- Reinsert them firmly, ensuring each clicks into place.
- If any feel empty or light, replace them.
4. Clean the Printhead
- Use the printer’s maintenance menu to run a second-level or third-level cleaning cycle.
- This forces air through the ink system to clear clogs.
5. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Remove all cartridges.
- Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in, turn it on, and reinstall cartridges.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
