Hi @Joy_Mark

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue—when your HP DeskJet 3520 feeds paper but prints nothing in black, even though color might work, it’s usually a sign of a clogged or failing black ink cartridge, or a printhead issue.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and fix the printing issues in your HP Deskjet 3520 printer:

1. Check Ink Levels

  • Control Panel: From the home screen, select Ink Levels. This will show the current ink levels of your cartridges.
  • Printer Software: Double-click the HP Deskjet 3520 series desktop icon, or Start > All Programs > HP > HP Deskjet 3520 series > HP Deskjet 3520 series. Click Estimated Ink Levels.

If the black ink cartridge is low or empty, replace it with a new one.

2. Replace the Black Cartridge

To replace the black cartridge:

  1. Power On: Ensure the printer is turned on.
  2. Open Cartridge Door: Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the right side.
  3. Remove Cartridge: Press the tab on the black cartridge and remove it from the slot.
  4. Insert New Cartridge:
    • Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
    • Twist the orange cap to snap it off.
    • Match the color icon and slide the cartridge into the slot until it clicks into place.
    • Close the cartridge door.

3. Align the Print Cartridges

Alignment ensures high-quality output. Here's how to align from the Printer Software:

  1. Load Paper: Load letter-sized or A4 plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. Printer Software: Open the Printer Software (Start > All Programs > HP > HP Deskjet 3520 series > HP Deskjet 3520 series), click Print and Scan, and then Maintain Your Printer to access the Printer Toolbox.
  3. Align Printheads: Click Align Printheads on the Device Services tab. Follow the onscreen prompts.

4. Clean the Print Cartridges

Cleaning can help if no ink is printed.

  1. Printer Software: Access the Printer Toolbox as described above.
  2. Device Services Tab: Click Clean Printheads and follow the instructions.

5. Print Diagnostic Page

Printing a diagnostics page can help identify the problem:

  1. Load Paper: Ensure the printer has plain white paper.
  2. Printer Software: In the Printer Toolbox, click Print Diagnostic Information on the Device Reports tab.
  3. Review Diagnostic Page: Check for streaks or missing portions in the color and black boxes. Clean the printhead if necessary.

6. Update or Reinstall Printer Driver

Ensure your printer driver is updated:

  • Device Manager: Open Device Manager, find Printers, right-click on HP Deskjet 3520, and choose Update driver.
  • HP Support: Visit the HP support website to download and install the latest driver for your printer model.

7. Windows Troubleshooting Tool

Windows can help troubleshoot and fix printer issues:

  • Settings: Navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Printer and run the troubleshooter.

8. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Ensure all packaging material has been removed.
  • Make sure the cartridge clean contacts are properly seated and there are no obstructions.
