HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
I'm getting an error:
"The print carriage cannot move.
Open Cartridge access door, clear any paper jam or obstruction, and select OK."
I have opened and close several times, after removing the paper. I have unplugged 3 times waiting 60 seconds.
I have moved the carriage back and forth, there is no obstruction.
I can not clear this error.

Hi @Imagecutter,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you've already done a lot to troubleshoot this issue. Here are a few additional steps you can try to resolve the "print carriage cannot move" error:
Check for Obstructions:
- Make sure there are no small bits of paper or debris stuck inside the printer, particularly in the carriage area. Use a flashlight to check thoroughly.
Inspect the Carriage:
- Ensure that the print carriage moves freely along the track. Look for any signs of damage or misalignment that might be preventing it from moving properly.
Reset the Printer:
- With the printer turned on, unplug it from the power source. Wait about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
Check the Carriage Belt:
- The print carriage is moved by a belt. If the belt is dislodged or broken, it can cause this error. This might be difficult to check without disassembling the printer, but if you're comfortable, you can look for any issues with the belt.
Verify Cartridge Installation:
- Remove the cartridges and reinstall them carefully. Make sure they are seated correctly in their slots.
Look for Printer Updates:
- Sometimes firmware updates can fix bugs. Check the HP website for any available updates for your printer model.
Factory Reset:
- If none of the above steps work, you might want to try a factory reset. Refer to your printer’s manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
