I recently purchased an HP Officejet Pro 8600 from an estate sale but it's telling me that the wireless and default settings are blocked by my administrator. How can I reset?

Hi @LoriC23

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the printer has some sort of administrative lock or configuration that’s preventing you from changing the settings, such as the default printer or wireless settings. This might happen if the printer was previously used in a network environment with specific restrictions or settings.

Here are the steps you can follow to reset the printer and regain control of its settings:

1. Perform a Factory Reset

A factory reset will restore the printer to its default settings and remove any network configurations or administrator restrictions. Here's how you can do it:

  • On the Printer’s Control Panel:
    1. Turn on the printer.
    2. From the home screen, tap the "Wireless" or "Setup" button (it may look like a wrench or gear icon).
    3. Navigate to "Network" or "Restore Defaults".
    4. Select "Restore Network Settings" or "Restore All Settings" (this option may vary depending on the model).
    5. Confirm the reset when prompted. This will remove any saved wireless networks and reset other settings to default.

2. Reset the Printer via Web Interface (If Already Connected to Network)

If your printer is already connected to your network, you can access it via a web browser to reset or configure settings:

Find the Printer’s IP Address:

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to "Wireless" or "Network" settings to locate the IP address.
  • Alternatively, print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s menu.

Access the Printer’s Web Interface:

  • Open a web browser on your computer.
  • Enter the printer’s IP address in the browser’s address bar (e.g., http://192.168.x.x).
  • This will bring you to the printer’s embedded web server (EWS) page.

Reset the Printer from the Web Interface:

  • In the EWS, go to the "Network" or "Settings" section.
  • Look for an option like "Restore Defaults" or "Reset Settings".
  • Select the option to reset the printer’s settings to default, which should clear any admin restrictions.

3. Reconfigure the Printer’s Wireless Settings

Once the reset is complete, you'll need to reconfigure the printer's wireless settings:

  1. Go to "Wireless Settings" from the printer's menu.
  2. Select your wireless network and enter the Wi-Fi password.
  3. Once connected, the printer should be able to communicate with your devices again.

4. Check for Administrator Passwords

If the printer has a password set by the previous owner, you may need to enter that password to make any changes. Since you bought the printer from an estate sale, it's possible that the previous owner had set up a password or admin settings that are now blocking changes. If you can't find the password:

  • Contact the previous owner’s estate (if possible) to see if they have any records or documentation for the printer.
  • If you can’t find the password, the reset process should typically remove any previous configurations.

I hope this helps.
