Yellow cartridge needed replacing on HP Officejet Pro 8610.  Two new cartridges were inserted, Officejet Pro Printer Assistant displays a red X over yellow for both.  Printer will not print.  Any ideas on next step?  Thanks.

Hi @Thomas1638 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer is not recognizing the new yellow cartridges, there are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Check the Cartridges

  • Ensure the yellow cartridges are genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP or counterfeit cartridges can sometimes cause recognition issues.
  • Make sure the protective tape or plastic has been completely removed from the cartridge contacts and nozzles before installation.
  • Inspect the cartridges for any visible damage or leaks.

2. Reinstall the Cartridges

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the printer's cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center.
  • Remove the yellow cartridges and carefully reinstall them, ensuring they click into place securely.
  • Close the access door and plug the printer back in.

3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it again.
  • Use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Allow the contacts to dry for a few minutes before reinstalling the cartridges and turning the printer back on.

4. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause cartridge recognition issues.
  • You can check for firmware updates using the HP Printer Assistant or by visiting the HP Support website.

5. Reset the Printer

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then into the printer.
  • Turn the printer on and try to print again.

6. Try Another Cartridge

  • If possible, try using another yellow cartridge to determine if the issue is with the cartridge itself.

7. Check for Error Messages

  • If there are any specific error messages on the printer's control panel, refer to the printer's manual or the HP support website for troubleshooting steps.

8. Printer Hardware Reset

  • If none of the above steps work, try performing a semi-full reset on your printer. This process can resolve more in-depth hardware or software issues:
    • Unplug the printer while it's on.
    • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
