Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M283cdw has stopped working.  It says
"Error printing on Color Laser Jet M283cdw (8BF3AE)"

Rebooting the printer works about 1/5 of the time.  On the support page, entering 8BF3AE does not come up as a legitimate error code.  I've added the printer to my profile, but on this page "Select from products" does not show it and "refresh the list" does not bring it up.

I probably need an updated driver, can someone provide a link for downloading the correct updated driver?  I can't seem to find said link.

Thanks

Hi @Skeptic53

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The error code 8BF3AE on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw likely points to a driver or communication issue between the printer and Windows.

Installing the latest full software package should help resolve it.

Steps to resolve error 8BF3AE and install the correct driver

Uninstall existing HP software and drivers

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  • Uninstall anything listed as HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw, HP Universal Print Driver, or HP App.
  • Open Device Manager > Printers, right-click your printer, and choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart your computer.

Download and install the full software solution

  • Visit the official HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw driver page.
  • Under “Driver-Product Installation Software,” download the Full Software Solution.
  • Run the installer with the printer powered on and connected via USB or Wi-Fi.
  • Follow all prompts to complete setup.

Reset the print spooler

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Locate Print Spooler, right-click and choose Stop.
  • Go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files inside.
  • Return to services.msc, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.

Use the HP App to re-add the printer

  • Open the HP App and go to Add Printer.
  • Follow the guided setup to reconnect your printer.
  • Run a test print to confirm resolution.

Update printer firmware

  • On the same driver page, scroll to “Firmware” and download the latest update.
  • Install it using the HP App or directly from your PC.

Set the printer as default

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your printer and click Set as default.
  • Disable “Let Windows manage my default printer” to prevent auto-switching.

Let me know how far you get with these steps.

Once the full software and firmware are installed cleanly, the error should disappear and printing should resume normally. I’ll stay with you until your Color LaserJet is back to  dependable output.
