Hi @Gsteph,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" on an HP printer is typically related to issues with the printer’s ink cartridges or printhead. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

Check the Ink Cartridges:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove each ink cartridge and check for any protective tape that might still be on the cartridge's copper contacts or nozzles.
  • Ensure the cartridges are properly seated in their slots.
  • Reinstall the ink cartridges, making sure they click into place securely.

Clean the Ink Cartridges and Printhead:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the ink cartridges and the corresponding contacts in the printer.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely.
  • Reinstall the ink cartridges and plug in the printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Sometimes, resetting the printer can help resolve the issue.
  • Turn on the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer while it is still on.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then into the printer.
  • Turn on the printer.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Go to the HP Support website and check for any firmware updates for your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware updates.

Align and Clean Printhead:

  • Use the printer’s control panel to navigate to the settings or tools menu.
  • Select “Align Printhead” and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Perform a printhead cleaning if the alignment does not resolve the issue.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Open the printer and inspect for any paper jams or foreign objects that might be obstructing the printhead carriage.

Run Printer Diagnostics:

  • Many HP printers have built-in diagnostic tools. Access these tools through the printer’s control panel or HP software on your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
