Hi @PatiB

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When your HP OfficeJet Pro 8625 displays a “Printer Failure” message, it usually means the printer has encountered a serious internal error—often related to the printhead, firmware, or power system. I know how unsettling this message can be, especially when everything was working fine before.

Let’s walk through a few steps to help bring your printer back to life:

Step-by-step: Clear the Printer Failure Message

1. Perform a power reset

This helps clear internal memory and reinitialize hardware components.

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the back
  • Unplug the cord from the wall outlet
  • Wait at least 60 seconds
  • Plug the cord back into the wall first, then into the printer
  • Power on the printer and check if the error clears

2. Check for firmware updates

Corrupted or outdated firmware can trigger system-level errors.

  • Open the HP App on your PC or mobile device
  • Select your printer > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Tools > Printer Updates
  • Follow prompts to install any available updates

3. Remove and reseat the printhead

If the error persists, reseating the printhead may help re-establish communication.

  • Open the ink cartridge access door
  • Wait for the carriage to stop moving
  • Gently lift the latch and remove the printhead
  • Carefully clean the electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth (dry only)
  • Reinsert the printhead and lock it in place
  • Close the access door and restart the printer

Note: Handle the printhead carefully to avoid damage. If you’re unsure, I can guide you through the steps visually.

4. Reset the printer to factory defaults

This clears any persistent software glitches.

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults
  • Confirm the reset and allow the printer to restart

Once these steps are complete, your printer should return to normal operation. If the message remains, I can help you interpret any error codes or guide you through checking the printhead status via the HP App.

You're doing the right thing by taking action—let’s get your printer back on track.
