Printer failure - there is a problem with the printer or ink system.   Turn printer off, then on.  If problem persists then contact HP

@gibbsplace,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Printer Failure" or "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 usually points to a hardware or ink-related issue. Try these troubleshooting steps.

Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait at least 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

Check the Ink Cartridges

  • Remove all ink cartridges.
  • Inspect them for leaks or damage.
  • Clean the electrical contacts (gold/copper-colored contacts) using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert the cartridges and ensure they click into place.

Clean the Printhead

If the issue persists, try cleaning the printhead:

  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Lift the printhead latch and remove the printhead.
  • Gently wipe the printhead's electrical contacts with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Reinstall the printhead, close the latch, and reinstall the cartridges.

Reset the Printer

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 1-2 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Update Firmware

If your printer still powers on, try updating the firmware:

  • Go to HP’s support site and download the latest firmware for the OfficeJet Pro 8610.
  • Install it via USB or HP Smart.

Try a Semi-Full Reset

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
