Hi @RZMc,

I understand your printer is making a grinding noise on startup, and no visible issue is found. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power Reset the Printer

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.

Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Sometimes a simple reset clears mechanical misalignment.

Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

Open all access doors, including the rear and input tray areas.

Remove any stuck paper, torn pieces, or debris that could block the carriage or rollers.

Make sure the paper path is completely clear before closing the panels.

Inspect the Carriage Movement

With the printer powered on, open the ink or toner access door.

Observe whether the carriage moves freely from side to side.

If it’s stuck, gently move it to the center when the printer is turned off.

Clean the Rollers

Open the rear access panel (if available) and check the rollers for dust or paper residue.

Use a lint-free, slightly damp cloth to clean them, then let them dry completely.

Update Printer Firmware

Open the HP Smart app → Printer Settings → Advanced Settings → Tools → Printer Update.

Install any available firmware updates to ensure optimal performance.

I hope this helps.

We are well past all that. Unable to reach any online help from HP, we replaced the printer over a month ago with another of the same model.
What I was hoping for is something from the warranty, which has a year left.
