Hi @clanbull ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer. It is frozen and won't print files but it can print a test page, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
Restart the Printer and Computer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Restart your computer.
Check Printer Connections:
- Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or to your network if it's a wireless printer.
- If it's a network printer, ensure it’s connected to the same network as your computer.
Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Go to the HP support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model. Update if necessary.
Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- Open Device Manager on your Windows 11 computer.
- Find your printer under "Printers" or "Print queues."
- Right-click on your printer and select "Update driver." Follow the prompts to search for and install any available updates.
- Alternatively, you can uninstall the current driver and reinstall the latest version from the HP website.
Clear Print Queue:
- Sometimes, stuck print jobs can cause the printer to freeze.
- Open "Control Panel" > "Devices and Printers."
- Right-click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 and select "See what's printing."
- In the print queue window, click "Printer" > "Cancel All Documents."
Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
- This tool can automatically diagnose and resolve printing and scanning issues.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure your Windows 11 system is fully updated. Go to "Settings" > "Windows Update" and install any pending updates.
Perform a Factory Reset on the Printer:
- If none of the above steps work, you may need to perform a factory reset on your printer. Consult the printer’s manual for instructions on how to do this.

Many thanks for your response and detailed instructions on how to fix this problem.
In the end I had to return to factory reset for printer and delete printer detail from computer, then re-install.
Works perfect now.
Thank you
