HP Smart Tank 530 Wireless All-in-One

I bought a used printer from a friend, guess there is too much dirt inside, i printed a few black and white papers was really thrilled with the quality ( looked similar to laser prints), then when printing images it started givig issues, now cyan isn't printing on the test paper of the images. tried to understand how to clean the printheads manually ( apparently they need to center to remove them and clean them, but it isnt happening in my case). The ink tanks are atleast 80% full. not able to figure out how to fix this. it may need vaccumming as the apt was pretty dusty, should i open it up and clean it? not sure ? Please advise. the first 10 prints cyan printed absolutely upto 90%. Repeated prints and tests cyan stopped completely. Also the left side print as suggested by HP doesnt exist in my prints, there is right side with cyan missing and some lines on them. alignment looks ok for now, but exasperated with how to clean the print heads manually and fix the issue without having to got to a HP Service Center

Hi @Mark92175

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP Smart Tank 530 has clogged printheads, particularly the cyan one. Since you've been printing successfully before it stopped, this is likely due to dried ink or dust buildup inside the printhead. Here’s a step-by-step guide to try and fix it:

Perform a Printhead Cleaning via HP Software

Open HP Smart App (or Printer Software on PC).
Go to Printer Settings > Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
Run the cleaning cycle twice or thrice if needed.
Print a test page to check if cyan starts appearing.

Manually Clean the Printheads

If the software cleaning doesn't work, you’ll need to clean the printheads manually.

A) Remove the Printheads (If the Printer Allows It)

The HP Smart Tank 530 uses a removable printhead system, but sometimes, it doesn’t move to the center when opening the access door.

Try this trick:

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the front access cover.
  3. Unplug the power cord while it is on (this forces it to release the carriage).
  4. Now, manually move the printhead to the center to access it.

If the printhead doesn’t come out, then it may be locked, and you’ll have to clean it in place

B) Clean the Printhead with a Damp Cloth

Gather Supplies:

  • Distilled water or printhead cleaning solution.
  • Lint-free cloth (or cotton swab).
Dampen the Cloth (don’t soak it).
Gently Wipe the Printhead Nozzles (bottom part).
Blot on a Dry Tissue (to see if cyan ink appears).
Let it dry for 5-10 minutes, reinstall, and test print.

Check the Cyan Ink Flow

If cyan still doesn’t print, the issue might be air bubbles in the ink system (common in Smart Tank printers).

  • Try "Ink Purging" by printing a full cyan test page (a solid blue page).
  • If it prints faintly at first but improves, keep printing until the ink flow restores.

Dust Cleaning

Since the printer was in a dusty environment, vacuuming might help but only on the outer parts.

  • Do NOT vacuum inside near the printhead assembly—it may damage sensitive components.
  • Instead, use compressed air or a soft brush to clean around the ink tanks.

Let me know how it goes! 😊
