It’s frustrating when your HP printer isn’t detecting the printheads, especially when you need it for printing. The "Printer heads not detected" error typically indicates an issue with the printhead assembly or its connection. Here’s how to troubleshoot and potentially fix this issue:
1. Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- After the waiting period, plug the printer back in, turn it on, and see if the issue persists.
- Sometimes, this simple reset can clear up temporary issues with the printhead detection.
2. Check the Printhead and Cartridges
- Open the printer's cover and check the printhead and ink cartridges. Sometimes, if the cartridges aren't seated correctly, the printer won’t detect them properly.
- Remove and reinstall the print cartridges to ensure they are seated properly in their respective slots.
- While you’re at it, inspect the printhead for any signs of dirt, debris, or dried ink. Use a soft cloth (slightly dampened with water) to gently clean the printhead area and the contacts on both the printhead and cartridges.
3. Clean the Printhead (if possible)
- If your printer allows it, try running the printhead cleaning utility via the printer’s settings. This is typically available in the printer's menu (either on the printer screen or through your computer).
- From the printer control panel: Go to Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead (exact names may vary by model).
- From the computer: Open the HP software on your computer, go to the printer maintenance options, and run the printhead cleaning utility.
4. Check for Printhead and Cartridge Errors
- Inspect for any visible damage to the printhead or ink cartridges. If the printhead or cartridge is damaged, the printer might not detect it correctly, causing the error.
- Ensure that the contacts on the printhead and cartridges are clean and not corroded. If you see any corrosion, gently clean it with a cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
5. Perform a Hard Reset
If power cycling didn't work, try a more thorough reset:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- While the printer is unplugged, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. This will help discharge any residual power in the printer.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
6. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers
- Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date, as outdated firmware can cause issues with printhead detection.
- To check for updates:
- Go to the HP Support website.
- Enter your printer model number, and look for any firmware updates.
- Install any available updates and then check if the issue is resolved
