@Trailwalker, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It seems like you're encountering the "printer in error state" issue, and I'm here to help you work through some troubleshooting steps to get everything back up and running! Let's dive in and get this sorted.

Step 1: Power and Reset Check
Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet, not a surge protector, as that could cause power issues. Now, we’ll perform a hard reset:

Turn off the printer.

  1. Unplug the power cable from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  2. If you have a USB cable connected, unplug that too.
  3. Wait about 2-3 minutes to let any residual charge dissipate.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to release any remaining charge.
  5. Plug the power cable back directly into the wall outlet (again, no surge protector).
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  7. Turn the printer on and wait for it to finish the warm-up and become idle.

Step 2: Test the Hardware
Once your printer is on, try to make a photocopy. Place a document on the scanner glass, select the "Copy" option, and see if it makes a clean copy. If the copy works, then the hardware itself is likely fine, and we can focus on the software or connection issue.

Step 3: Test the Printer on Another Device
If you have access to another computer, try printing from it. This helps us determine whether the issue is with the printer itself or just your computer’s connection.

If it works on another device, you can follow the steps below to reinstall the printer software on your current device.

Reinstall the Printer Software:

Uninstall the Printer:

Open Programs and Features in Windows.

Find and select your HP Printer.

Click Uninstall.

Remove the Printer from Devices:

Open Devices and Printers.

Right-click your HP Printer and select Remove Device.

Remove Printer Drivers:

Open the Run command (Windows Key + R) and type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Go to the Drivers tab and remove any HP printer drivers listed.

Restart Your PC.

Download Full Feature Software:

Head to HP’s official support website to download and install the latest full-feature software for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
