@dhenley, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The “Printer in error state” message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 can be caused by a variety of issues such as firmware glitches, driver conflicts, or connectivity problems. Let’s walk through some steps to resolve this:

Power Reset the Printer

This clears temporary errors.

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

Check for Paper Jams or Cartridge Issues

  • Open all access doors and remove any jammed paper.
  • Ensure cartridges are properly seated and not damaged.
  • Clean the cartridge contacts if needed.

Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause error states.

  • Go to: Official HP® Support
  • Enter OfficeJet Pro 8610, select your OS, and download the latest firmware.
  • Install it using USB or HP Smart app.

Reinstall Printer Drivers

Corrupted drivers can trigger error messages.

  • Uninstall the printer from Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Download and install the latest full feature software from HP: Official HP® Support

Final Steps

If the issue persists after these steps:

  • Try connecting the printer via USB to rule out network issues.
  • Perform a factory reset from the printer’s control panel (Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
