My printer shows to be in error status and I can't print anything. I printed something about a week ago but when I tried again tonight I get this error message. I've performed the hard reset, turned it off, unplugged it for more than 60 seconds, reconnected it and it's still in error message. Has the printer itself failed and needs replacing?

Hi @Jezza819,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I know how frustrating it is when your HP printer suddenly shows “printer in error status” after working just fine a week ago, especially after trying a hard reset and still getting nowhere. Let’s walk through the most effective steps to get your printer back online and printing again.
Step-by-Step Fix for “Printer in Error Status”
1. Restart Everything (In This Order)
- Turn off your printer and unplug it from the wall.
- Restart your computer.
- Restart your Wi-Fi router (if using wireless).
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on after 60 seconds.
This clears any stuck communication between your devices.
2. Run HP App Diagnose & Fix Tool
This tool can automatically detect and fix many common issues.
- Download or open the HP app: 👉 HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site
- In the app:
- Click the wrench icon (Windows) or printer dropdown (Mac).
- Select Diagnose & Fix and follow the prompts.
3. Check for Print Queue Errors
Sometimes, a stuck print job can cause the error status.
- On Windows:
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your printer > See what’s printing.
- Cancel all print jobs.
- Restart the Print Spooler service:
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, find Print Spooler, right-click > Restart.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
