HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Printer stopped working on last Friday. The cartridges seem to be stuck in one spot. The error message is: 0x6100004a

It has instructed me to clear paper jam, but there is no paper jam. I've restarted several times and checked inside several times with no resolution.

Printer: HP Office Jet Pro 6978

I would appreciate any help I can get in resolving thia issue.

Thanks

HI @Teach321,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The 0x6100004a error on the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 typically indicates a carriage jam or an internal hardware issue. Given that you've already checked for paper jams and restarted the printer multiple times, here are some additional steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Step 1: Hard Reset the Printer

  1. Turn Off and Unplug:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait:
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect and Power On:
    • Plug the printer back into the power source and turn it on.

Step 2: Manually Check and Move the Carriage

  1. Power Off:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open Printer Cover:
    • Open the printer’s top cover to access the carriage area.
  3. Move the Carriage:
    • Gently move the print carriage (the part that holds the ink cartridges) to the left and right to ensure it moves freely. If it is stuck, carefully check for and remove any obstructions.
  4. Check for Obstructions:
    • Look for any small pieces of paper, debris, or foreign objects that might be blocking the carriage path.

Step 3: Clean the Carriage and Carriage Path

  1. Remove Ink Cartridges:
    • Open the printer and carefully remove the ink cartridges.
  2. Clean Contacts:
    • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer where the cartridges sit.
  3. Reinstall Cartridges:
    • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.

Step 4: Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

  1. Access Menu:
    • Refer to your printer's manual to access the menu and perform a factory reset.
  2. Perform Factory Reset:
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer to its factory settings.

Step 5: Check for Firmware Updates

  1. Download Firmware:
    • Visit the HP support website and search for the latest firmware for your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978.
  2. Install Firmware:
    • Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
