I had an issue with my printer where the printer heads were no good.  I purchased new printer heads and installed them, it read they were genuine heads.  My printer still would not print out but I was able to make copies.  I went onto the HP page and started to see if my printer needed updates.  I attempted to download and install a firmware update.  Now my printer is completely shot.  I get a red blinking light and a message on top saying 8AF30001.  I shut off and restarted the printer holding the power button and it comes up with the back arrow and an x.  I am unable to do anything from there.

Hi @Carmo3048,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how disheartening it must feel, especially after replacing the printheads and seeing them recognized as genuine, only to have your printer stop working entirely after a firmware update. That blinking red light and the error code 8AF30001 are like a silent scream from the printer, and the screen stuck on the back arrow and X makes it feel like you’re locked out of your own device.

Let’s walk through the recovery steps to help bring your printer back to life.

Step-by-Step Recovery for HP Printer Error 8AF30001 After Firmware Update

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

This clears residual memory and may reset the firmware state:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  • Turn the printer back on while holding the power button for 10 seconds.

2. Try a Semi-Full Reset (if accessible)

If the printer shows the back arrow and X, try this:

  • Press and hold both the back arrow and X simultaneously for 10–15 seconds.
  • If the printer responds, follow any prompts to reset or restart.

3. Use HP Firmware Recovery Tool (Windows Only)

If your printer is stuck due to a failed firmware update, HP offers a recovery tool:

4. Check for Dynamic Security Lock

HP firmware updates may activate dynamic security, which blocks non-HP cartridges or printheads even if they were previously accepted.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
