My printer disconnects daily.  I am constantly trying to reconnect it to my desktop and iPhones so I can print something.  What do I need to do to stay connected to the HP Utility?

Hi @1HotMomma

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It’s genuinely frustrating to have your printer vanish from the network just when you need it.

To keep your printer consistently connected to your desktop and iPhones, you’ll want to stabilize its Wi-Fi connection, assign a fixed IP address, and ensure your devices are using the HP App.

These steps help prevent daily disconnections and restore smooth printing.

Step-by-step to keep your printer connected reliably

1. Assign a manual IP address to the printer

  • On the printer’s control panel, print a Network Configuration Page.
  • Note the current IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.105).
  • Open the HP App on your desktop.
  • Go to Advanced Settings > Network Settings > IPv4 Configuration.
  • Change from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual.
  • Enter the current IP, subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0), and default gateway (your router’s IP).
  • Save and restart the printer.

2. Update printer firmware

  • In the HP App, select your printer > Advanced Settings > Printer Updates.
  • Install any available updates to improve wireless stability.

3. Ensure your router uses a 2.4 GHz band

  • HP printers typically connect best to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • If your router has dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), make sure your printer is connected to the 2.4 GHz network.
  • You can rename the bands separately to help devices connect to the correct one.

4. Use the HP App on all devices

  • Install the HP App on your iPhones via the App Store.
  • Open the app and add your printer using its IP address or network name.
  • This ensures consistent communication and access to print features.

5. Disable sleep mode or auto-off (optional)

  • On the printer’s control panel or via the HP App:
    • Go to Settings > Power Management.
    • Set Auto-Off to Never or extend the sleep timer.
  • This keeps the printer awake and responsive to incoming jobs.

6. Restart your network weekly

  • Power cycle your router and printer once a week to refresh connections.
  • This helps prevent IP conflicts and stale network sessions.

For additional guidance, you can visit HP’s Printer Offline Help Page which includes interactive tools to diagnose and fix connection issues.
