My warranty expired 4 years ago, but despite that, I would like to continue printing with my printer. I've already bought new ink cartridges for it, but as of late, it can't even print, anything. Maybe only a test page from time to time, but even then, it takes like an hour to complete. This is costing me ink and time, and I have to find other printing solutions because my printer has stopped working. I've updated it, and rolled back updates, and ensured it is using ONLY HP ink cartridges. The only thing it can do competently is scan things to a USB.

Hi @JC36142,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is experiencing serious printing issues, despite using genuine HP ink cartridges. If it's only printing intermittently, extremely slowly, or not at all, even after updating and rolling back updates, there could be several possible causes. Let's work through some potential solutions:
1. Reset the Printer
Sometimes, a simple reset can resolve print issues by clearing out temporary bugs and errors.
- Turn off the Printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
- Turn the printer back on and try printing a test page to see if the problem persists.
2. Check Print Queue & Clear Jobs
A large number of stuck print jobs in the print queue can cause delays or prevent new jobs from being processed.
- Open Devices and Printers on your computer.
- Right-click on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer icon and select See what's printing.
- In the print queue window, click Printer and select Cancel All Documents.
- After clearing the queue, try printing again.
3. Check Ink Cartridge and Printhead Status
If the printer is using genuine HP cartridges and still facing issues, there could be a problem with the cartridges or printheads.
- Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure the cartridges are properly installed and seated securely.
- Run Printhead Cleaning: From the printer’s control panel, run the Printhead Cleaning utility to resolve any clogging that might be preventing proper ink flow.
- Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead. You might need to run the cleaning process a few times.
4. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions
Make sure there are no obstructions, even small ones, inside the printer that might be causing issues.
- Open the printer and inspect the paper path for any bits of paper, debris, or obstructions.
- Use a flashlight if necessary to thoroughly check the paper feed and rollers.
5. Update or Reinstall Drivers
Corrupted or outdated printer drivers could cause communication issues between the printer and computer, leading to slow or failed print jobs.
Uninstall the current printer driver:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 and choose Remove device.
- Restart your computer.
Download and install the latest driver from the HP Support website for your printer model, ensuring it matches your operating system.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @JC36142 ,
Please find the remaining steps below.
6. Disable HP Smart App & Print Directly from the Computer
If you're using the HP Smart App to manage print jobs, there could be a glitch in how it communicates with your printer.
- Print directly from the computer using the built-in print option (e.g., using Windows Print Manager or MacOS Print menu) instead of using the HP Smart app.
7. Try a Different USB Cable or Network Connection
If you're using a wired connection, try replacing the USB cable. Faulty cables can cause delayed or incomplete printing.
- If you are using Wi-Fi, try connecting the printer to your computer using a USB cable to see if the problem is with the network connection.
8. Check Printer Firmware
If you've already updated the firmware and rolled back the updates without improvement, it's possible the firmware is corrupted or incompatible with your current setup. Ensure you're using the most compatible version for your printer.
- Check HP’s website for the latest firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 and reinstall it.
9. Factory Reset the Printer
A factory reset will restore the printer to its default settings and may clear out any persistent issues.
From the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults. This will reset the printer, but it will also remove any custom settings or saved configurations.
Once reset, reconnect your printer and try to print.
10. Check Your Print Settings
Ensure that your print jobs are not being processed with unnecessary high-quality settings (e.g., "Best" instead of "Normal") unless required, as this could slow down printing significantly.
- Check your print settings from the application you're printing from:
- Select Print, then go to Properties.
- Set the print quality to Normal or Draft (instead of Best).
11. Try Printing from Another Computer or Device
If the problem persists, try connecting the printer to a different device to rule out issues with the computer or software.
- If the printer works fine with another device, the issue could be specific to your current computer setup.
If none of these solutions work, your printer may have a hardware issue that requires repair or replacement. Since you've tried many steps already, contacting HP Phone Support would be the best next step.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
