Microsoft Windows 11

I own two HP printers, an HP CP2025 laser jet and an HP8600 inkjet. A couple of days ago, my 8600 started printing to the laser printer and giving me an error of "unsupported personality: unknown".
A bit more detail here. If I try to print from an application and select the inkjet printer from the drop down (it is visible in the devices) and click 'print', the output goes instead to the laser jet printer and results in the 'unsupported personality: unknown".
The printers show up on my network (in file explorer, in connected devices, and with IP scanner software). I can ping the computer to the stated IP address, but when I open their properties in Windows (Home) 11, the IP is an IPV6 and the IPV4 number. The addresses are different so there is not a conflict there.

Last week (and again today) I tried to install the office jet software that allows me to control scanning, faxing, copying, and printing. The installation fails because it cannot find the printer on the ethernet network.
I have an older Win10 computer on the same network and the printer was identified and I was able to scan some documents from that computer through the software (which I had installed several years ago). It will print, scan, and copy from the Win 10 desktop application.
At this point, I am stumped so any help would be appreciated.

@leh48, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Issue with Printer Printing to Wrong Printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Your HP 8600 inkjet printer is outputting print jobs to the HP CP2025 laser jet printer, resulting in an error message "unsupported personality: unknown."

Possible Causes:

  1. Driver Conflicts: There may be a conflict between the drivers for the two printers.
  2. Printer Settings: The application or computer might have incorrect printer settings.
  3. Network Issues: If the printers are networked, there may be a mix-up in IP addresses or printer names.

Solutions:

Check Printer Drivers:

  1. Uninstall and Reinstall Drivers: Remove the drivers for both printers and reinstall them. Ensure you download the latest drivers from the HP Support website.
  2. Separate Drivers: Make sure each printer uses its respective driver.

Verify Printer Settings:

  1. Default Printer: Ensure the correct printer is set as the default in your computer's settings.
  2. Application Settings: Verify that the application you are printing from is correctly selecting the intended printer.

Network Configuration:

  1. IP Addresses: Make sure each printer has a unique IP address if they are networked.
  2. Printer Names: Rename printers if necessary to avoid confusion.

Steps:

Uninstalling Printer Drivers:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click on each printer and select Remove Device.
  3. Uninstall any printer software related to HP CP2025 and HP8600.

Reinstalling Printer Drivers:

  1. Download the latest drivers from the HP Support website.
  2. Install the drivers for each printer individually.
  3. Restart your computer after installation.

Setting Default Printer:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click on the intended printer and select Set as Default Printer.

Network and Application Settings:

  1. Verify network settings and ensure each printer is correctly configured.
  2. Check the printer selection within applications before printing.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Actually no, the response did not help. I had tried nearly every step there. The IP addresses, ON MY NETWORK, were not in conflict, BUT the IP addresses shown in printer properties were NOT addresses an IP scan on my network shows, but were to a 'url'.
When I tried to connect the HP8600 through the HP Office Jet program, it cannot be found on the LAN.
The response is what I have come to call the 'typical script' of nearly always worthless responses.
I finally got the printers to print correctly, unplugged them both and let them sit for a couple of hours while I ran errands.
I still cannot get my HP8600 to be recognized by the Office Jet program, yet if I click the 'open device web page', it opens a tab on my browser WITH the LAN IP ADDRESS and a LIMITED feature set. The one thing I want to do, scan to a network folder gives me an 'ssl' error, which on an older (now defunct) computer on the same network never failed (but using the Office Jet software).
Of course, Macro$carf did not help by doing a major update on the computer and turning off 'file sharing' between when I posted and today. At least file explorer gave me the change when I went to verify the 'address' of the printer.

What I am beginning to suspect, the HP software will not function on a Windoze 11 computer and if that is the case, I wish they would tell us so. The 8600 may be older technology, but hey so am I. It still prints and up until my win 10 computer died, did everything I wanted it to do.
