When I try to print, the printer prints one line, shoots out the paper and the power button flashes. There is no way to turn it off other than unplugging. This is for a smart tank 5000. I have cancelled the printing from my phone

Hi @Bmjohns72,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue you're describing with your HP Smart Tank 5000 All-in-One Printer—where it prints one line, ejects the paper, and the power button flashes—can often be caused by one of the following:

Potential Causes

Incomplete or Corrupted Print Jobs
Sometimes, a corrupted print job can cause the printer to behave erratically.

Firmware or Driver Issues
An outdated or corrupted firmware or driver might cause communication issues between the printer and your device.

Hardware Malfunction
Internal issues such as a faulty sensor or power supply might lead to this problem.

Paper Jam or Misfeed
Even if you don’t see any visible paper jams, a sensor might falsely detect a blockage.

Ink System Issue
If there's a problem with the ink system, the printer may not complete printing tasks properly.

Steps to Resolve

Cancel All Print Jobs

  • Open the HP Smart app or your computer’s print queue.
  • Cancel all pending print jobs.

Perform a Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Update Firmware and Software

  • Ensure the printer firmware is updated to the latest version via the HP Smart app or HP's website.
  • Update the printer driver on your device.

Inspect for Paper Jams or Obstructions

  • Check the paper feed and output trays for any small pieces of paper or debris.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door and inspect for obstructions.

Check Ink Levels and Reinsert Ink Tanks

  • Verify that the ink tanks are filled to the appropriate level.
  • Reinsert the ink tanks securely.

Run a Diagnostic Test

  • Use the HP Smart app or the printer's control panel to run a diagnostic test. Check for errors or alerts.

Factory Reset the Printer (if the above steps fail)

  • Locate the reset instructions in your printer's manual or on HP's support website User manual
  • Resetting the printer can often clear persistent issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
