HP Envy 4500 printer tells me to replace the brand new HP black ink cartridge. I have followed advice from here to clean connections points with a coffee filter but am still getting the error message.

Hi @pickle76,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Cartridge Authenticity:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridge is a genuine HP-branded cartridge. Counterfeit or third-party cartridges may not be recognized correctly.

Reinsert the Cartridge:

  • Carefully remove the black ink cartridge from the printer.
  • Turn off the printer, wait a few moments, then turn it back on.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridge firmly into its slot. Ensure it clicks into place correctly.

Clean Ink Cartridge Contacts:

  • Even after using a coffee filter, the contacts may still need further cleaning. Use a clean, lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the ink cartridge once more.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridge into the printer.

Reset Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This reset can sometimes clear errors related to ink cartridges.

Run Diagnostic Tests:

  • Use the printer’s built-in diagnostic tools to check for issues.
  • From the printer’s menu, navigate to Setup > Tools and run a Print Quality Report or Align Printer test. This may help identify or resolve the cartridge recognition issue.

Update Printer Firmware:

Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.

Test with Another Cartridge:

  • If possible, try using another new black ink cartridge to see if the issue persists. This will help determine if the problem is with the specific cartridge or the printer itself.

I hope this helps.
