The printer is telling me that I have to contact HP to continue printing. I don't have a printing service from HP, and buy my own cartridges. However my husband has another printer here that he did have the HP service on and recently cancelled.

I'd be happy to help you! 

 

If you have canceled your instant ink account and are unable to print with HP regular cartridges, here's what you need to know & do:

 

If you have an instant ink cartridge on your printer, remove it and discard that, you can only use regular cartridges on your printer once you cancel the program.

 

That said, if you have trouble using regular cartridges, I recommend you turn off the web service using the steps from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04808536

 

when done successfully, check if it works fine.
