Hi @Youngchriss60

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry your HP ENVY 5640 is showing an “Out of Paper” error—it’s especially frustrating when there’s paper loaded and you're ready to print.

Let’s walk through a few precise steps to help restore smooth, uninterrupted printing.

1. Check and Reload the Paper Stack

  • Remove all paper from the input tray
  • Fan the stack to prevent sheets from sticking
  • Reload plain white A4 or Letter-size paper, aligning it snugly against the right edge
  • Adjust the paper width guides so they just touch the edges—don’t pinch the paper

2. Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Dust or worn rollers can prevent paper from feeding correctly.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord
  • Open the access door and locate the rollers inside the rear paper path
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the rollers
  • Let them dry for 10 minutes before closing the printer and reconnecting power

For detailed steps, visit: Clean Paper Feed Rollers – HP ENVY 5640

3. Reset the Printer

This clears temporary errors and reinitializes sensors.

  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the rear
  • Unplug the cord from the wall outlet
  • Wait 60 seconds
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on

4. Run a Paper Feed Diagnostic

  • Open the HP App on your computer or mobile device
  • Select your printer > Printer Settings > Tools > Printer Reports
  • Run the Print Quality Report or Printer Status Report
  • If the printer feeds paper for these, the issue may be application-specific

5. Update Firmware and Drivers

Let me know if you'd like help locating the paper feed rollers or checking the firmware version. Once these steps are complete, your printer should feed paper smoothly and resume normal operation.
