HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My printer shuts itself down at some time after printing.  I send a print job and check to see if it printed and, no, the printer is OFF and I did not shut it down.  It didn't do this until a few days ago; it was always on and available to print.

@carele, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 is shutting down automatically, which could be due to energy-saving settings, firmware issues, or a power-related problem. Try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue:

Check Auto Power Off and Sleep Settings

Your printer may be set to turn off automatically after a period of inactivity.

On the printer's control panel, go to:

  • Setup > Preferences > Energy Savings or Auto-Off
  • If Auto-Off is enabled, disable it or increase the inactivity time.

Also, check the Sleep Mode settings:

  • Setup > Preferences > Sleep Mode
  • Increase the sleep timer to prevent premature shutdowns.

Update Printer Firmware

Firmware updates can fix known bugs.

  • On the printer:
    • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer
  • On your PC:
    • Download the latest firmware from the HP Support website and install it.

Power Reset the Printer

A simple reset might fix the issue.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cable from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Plug it back in and power it on.

Check Power Source & Cable

  • Ensure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector or extension cord).
  • Try using a different power cable (if available).

Disable Instant Ink Service (If Applicable)

  • If you're using HP Instant Ink service, temporary connectivity issues may cause unexpected shutdowns.
  • Try disabling Web Services in the printer settings and see if the issue persists.

Perform a Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If nothing works, reset the printer to factory settings:

  • On the printer's control panel, go to:
    • Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults > Restore Factory Defaults

Let me know how it goes!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
