HP Office Jet Pro 7740 Wide Format All in One
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Printer is stuck in verify. Will not turn off with on/off switch. Tried unplugging and replugging and when I plug it up it is still on. Tried pushing the x at the bottom of the window 4 times as I had seen suggested on the site. To date, nothing has an effect. Still sits there verifying. What should I try next.

Hi @Burtsboro8,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your OfficeJet Pro 7740 is stuck on “verifying” and won’t power off even after unplugging and reconnecting. Let’s go through a few steps to try and resolve this.

Perform a Hard Reset

Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.

Leave it disconnected for at least 2–3 minutes.

Press and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds to drain any residual power.

Reconnect the printer directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors or extension cords) and try turning it back on.

Check for Firmware Recovery Mode

While the printer is powered off, press and hold # and 6 on the control panel.

Plug the power cord back in while holding the keys.

Release the keys when the display shows signs of starting. This forces a firmware recovery reset.

Update Firmware (if it starts up)

If you manage to get past the “verifying” screen, immediately connect the printer to your PC and check for firmware updates via HP Smart or HP Easy Start.

Keeping the firmware up to date prevents this loop from happening again.

I hope this helps.
