Printer will not connect to WiFi anymore. The same WiFi since 8 years now. It only connects to hotspot from my mobile internet connection. But then it will not print every file. Most of them are being rejected for printing. Everytime I get the message *technical error. please turn off and turn on again* What can I do to solve this issue? Thanks in advance.Printer name is HP Color Laser Jet MFP M283fdw

@Siammie, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Since your HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw connects to a hotspot but no longer connects properly to your long-used home Wi-Fi, this indicates a network authentication or printer firmware issue rather than a hardware fault. The “technical error. please turn off and turn on again” message often appears when the printer’s wireless connection or print queue crashes due to corrupted network settings or outdated firmware.

Here’s how to bring it back to normal:

Power Reset

Turn off the printer, unplug the power cable, and leave it for 60 seconds.

Power off the Wi-Fi router for 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

Once your network is fully up, reconnect the printer’s power cord and turn it on.

Forget and Reconnect Wi-Fi Network on the Printer

On the printer control panel, tap Wireless icon → Settings → Restore Network Settings.

Wait until the wireless light blinks blue (ready for setup).

From the panel, go to Wireless Setup Wizard and select your Wi-Fi network manually.

Enter the password carefully (case-sensitive).

If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, select 2.4 GHz — this printer does not consistently maintain 5 GHz connections.

Reinstall Printer Software with HP Smart

On your PC, open HP App→ Printer Settings → Advanced Settings → Networking.

If the printer still does not appear, remove it and add it again through “Add Printer → Wi-Fi Setup.”

Ensure your PC is connected to the same Wi-Fi band as the printer.

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Check Router Security Settings

Ensure your Wi-Fi is using WPA2 or WPA3 Personal security.

Avoid mixed WPA/WPA2 modes, which can sometimes block stable printer authentication.

Resolve “Technical Error” When Printing via Hotspot

This happens because hotspot connections change IPs frequently, breaking the print session.

Use Wi-Fi Direct instead if you must print via mobile:

On printer → Wi-Fi Direct → Turn On → Show Password.

Connect your phone to that network and print directly using HP Smart.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
