Hi @RogerLitch,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP Envy 5640 printer. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem.
- Check Paper Alignment: Ensure that the paper is properly aligned in the feed tray. Sometimes, if the paper is not aligned correctly, the printer may not detect it properly.
- Check Paper Type and Size Settings: Make sure that the paper type and size settings on both the printer and your Mac are correct and match the paper loaded in the tray.
- Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again. This can sometimes reset any internal errors or glitches.
- Update Printer Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your Mac. You can usually download these from the HP website or through the Apple Software Update feature on your Mac.
- Restart Your Mac: Sometimes, simply restarting your Mac can resolve communication issues between your computer and the printer.
- Check for Paper Jams: Even if it seems like there's paper in the feed tray, there may be a small piece of paper stuck somewhere in the printer causing the issue. Open up the printer and check for any paper jams or debris.
- Clean Paper Feed Rollers: Over time, dust and debris can accumulate on the paper feed rollers, causing them to not grip the paper properly. You can clean the rollers with a damp lint-free cloth.
- Check Printer Settings: Ensure that the printer settings on your Mac are configured correctly. Sometimes, settings such as paper size or paper source can cause issues.
- Try Printing from Another Device: If possible, try printing from another device (e.g., a different computer or a smartphone) to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is with the printer or with your Mac specifically.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
