Can someone help me figure out how to make the printheads on my HP Smart Tank Plus 550 move to the center for replacement? When I open both covers, the carriage stays on the left side and doesn’t move to the center as expected. Thanks in advance!

Hi @Hueschter,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
Let's try a few steps.
Moving the Printhead Carriage to the Center for Replacement - HP Smart Tank Plus 550
If the printhead carriage on your HP Smart Tank Plus 550 is not moving to the center when you open the access doors, you might be facing an issue that needs intervention. Here’s how you can get the carriage to move:
- Ensure the Printer is On: Make sure your HP printer is powered on. The carriage will only move if the printer is turned on.
- Check for Printhead Error State: The carriage may only move to the center if the printer is indicating a printhead error. Check the printer display or control panel for any error messages.
- Use the Control Panel: If the printer has a control panel, check for instructions on aligning the printheads or refer to any on-screen prompts. The control panel may have the option that triggers the carriage to move to the center.
- Press and Hold Buttons: As some models have a unique way to engage the carriage:
- If applicable, try holding the Black Color Copy button for about three seconds. This action might trigger the carriage movement mechanism.
- Check for Obstructions: Ensure there's no obstruction inside the printer that might be preventing the carriage from moving.
- Reload the System:
- Turn off the printer using the Power button.
- After a short pause, turn it back on and reopen the printhead access door to see if the carriage moves.
- Manual Movement Not Recommended: Avoid trying to move the carriage manually to prevent any potential damage.
For a detailed guide on replacing printheads, refer to this HP Smart Tank 500, 600 Printers - Replacing Printheads for visual aids and extra support.
If the problem persists, there might be a need for more technical intervention or repair. In some cases, the issue might need professional servicing.
