HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8610 printer and has performed well over the years.  The other day it stopped printing and gave me an error message Missing or Failed Printhead.  I tried the suggested cleaning procedure that the virtual assistant suggested with no luck, so I ordered a new printhead C6342A (4 cartridge system); no difference.  Even tried powering unit off, unplugging and plugging back in still had no success?  Any suggestions.

Hi @DavidK51, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since you've already tried replacing the printhead (C6342A) and performed basic troubleshooting, the persistent "Missing or Failed Printhead" error suggests a deeper issue. Try these additional steps:

1. Reset the Printer

  1. Power off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for 2–3 minutes to allow residual charge to drain.
  3. Plug the printer back in and power it on.

2. Reinstall the Printhead

  1. Open the printhead access door and remove the cartridges.
  2. Carefully lift the printhead latch and remove the printhead.
  3. Inspect the gold contacts (on both the printhead and printer carriage) for dirt or ink buildup. If needed, gently clean them with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  4. Reinstall the printhead, ensure it is securely latched, and reinstall the cartridges.
  5. Close the access door and check if the error persists.

3. Check Firmware Updates

  1. Download and install the latest firmware update from the HP Support website.
  2. Restart the printer and check if the issue is resolved.

4. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

If the error still appears:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Press and hold # and 9 keys while plugging in the power cord.
  3. Keep holding the buttons until the printer turns on and displays a reset message.

This will restore factory settings and may clear the error.

5. Inspect for Hardware Issues

If none of the above steps work:

  • There could be a faulty printhead connector or a carriage board failure.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
