@johnkitty, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Printhead Problems with HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your new HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer is indicating a printhead problem and you've already gone through all the available troubleshooting instructions, it's advisable to follow these advanced steps:

Ink Level Check: Ensure that all ink tanks in your printer are filled to the recommended levels. Low ink levels can affect print quality and functionality.

Printhead Cleaning: Use the HP Smart app to clean the printhead. This can fix issues like streaks, incorrect colors, and faded printouts.

  • Open the HP Smart app.
  • Click on the image of your printer to open the settings.
  • Under Tools, select Print Quality Tools.
  • Choose Clean Printhead.

Print Quality Diagnostic Page:

  • On the printer's control panel, press and hold the Information button for five seconds.
  • Then, press and hold the Color Copy button for three seconds.
  • A Print Quality Diagnostic Page will print. Review the patterns to check for defects.

Manual Cleaning:

  • Turn on the printer.
  • Lift the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop.
  • Press the blue button on the carriage to open the printhead cover.
  • Remove the printhead and clean it gently with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  • Then, reinsert the printhead and close the cover.

Printhead Replacement:

  • If cleaning does not resolve the issue, consider replacing the printhead.
  • Follow the instructions in your printer manual to replace the printhead.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
