My printer scans and copies fine, but when I try to print a file from my laptop it says that my printer is in an error.

@dean_keyes, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer scans and copies fine but shows an error when printing from your laptop, here are some common causes and solutions based on HP support and user experiences:

Possible Causes and Fixes

Driver or Software Issue

Faulty Ink Cartridge

  • Even if copying works, a faulty cartridge (especially black) can prevent printing from a computer.
  • Fix: Try removing and reinserting the cartridges one at a time. If one fails to print during a test, replace it.

Connection Issues

  • If you're using Wi-Fi, a weak or unstable connection can cause errors.
  • Fix: Try switching to a USB connection or ensure the printer is on the same network as your laptop.

Print Queue or Spooler Problems

  • A stuck print job or spooler error can block new print jobs.
  • Fix:
    • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click your printer > See what's printing.
    • Cancel all jobs.
    • Restart the Print Spooler service from the Services app.

Outdated or Corrupt Printer Driver

  • Fix: Uninstall the printer from your system and reinstall it using the latest drivers from the HP website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
