The error code 71.02.4A typically indicates a hardware issue, such as a carriage jam, sensor malfunction, or printhead failure. The carriage should move to the center when you open the access door, and the fact that it is not moving suggests it is physically stuck or a core component has failed.

Troubleshooting Steps
  1. Perform a Printer Reset:
    • With the printer turned ON, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
    • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet, and then into the back of the printer. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet to ensure a stable power source.
    • Turn the printer on and wait for it to fully initialize.
  2. Check for Mechanical Obstructions:
    • Power off the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall and printer.
    • Open the cartridge access door.
    • Gently and carefully use your hand to move the carriage to the center of the printer. If it is stuck and resists, do not force it, as this may indicate a mechanical jam that requires professional service.
    • Inspect the entire carriage path for any obstructions, such as crumpled paper, debris, or dislodged labels, and remove them carefully.
    • Ensure the carriage moves freely from side to side.
    • Close the access door.
    • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer on.
  3. Attempt a Cartridge Reset (if the carriage moves after the above steps):
    • Open the cartridge access door, and the carriage should move to the center.
    • Remove all ink cartridges carefully.
    • With the cartridges removed, unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet again.
    • Wait 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.
    • The printer should prompt you to install the cartridges. Reinsert them one by one, making sure they click securely into place.
    • Close the door and follow any alignment prompts.

Next Steps if the Error Persists
If the carriage still won't move, or the error immediately returns after these steps, it is likely a hardware failure of the printhead assembly, a sensor, or the main logic board.
  • If your printer is still under warranty, contact HP Support for repair or a replacement.
  • If the warranty has expired, you may need to consult a local printer repair shop, as replacing the affected components can sometimes be as costly as a new printer.
  • You can also check for firmware updates on the official HP website or through the HP Smart app, as outdated firmware can sometimes cause communication issues.
