I'm 81 years old...and when printing this morning on my Officejet Pro 8600 all of a sudden I got this message "? General Printer Error" with a Solution 1 to reset the product - which I did - didn't help. Solution 2:  Contact HP Support and to write down the error code provided in the message and then contact HP support.  Well I can't find an "error code"!!  So I'm here and it's so confusing - can somebody please tell me what to do?

Hi @Fox421,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

I understand that you are facing issues with the Printer Error.

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this issue by performing the necessary troubleshooting steps.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Are you able to make a copy from your printer?

Are you able to print from other devices?

Try few steps recommended below.

Resetting the printer can help restore a connection to the computer.

  • If the printer is off, turn on the printer, and then check the status of the printer.
If the printer starts printing jobs from the print queue, your printer is clearing out queued print jobs and is online. You can stop troubleshooting.
If the printer goes to an idle state after its startup routine, it might be online.
If the computer still shows the printer as offline, continue using these steps.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the printer power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds. Restart the computer while you are waiting.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Make sure the printer is connected to the computer or the network.

Also, uninstall the printer software from root level on your PC and install the full-feature printer software.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.

Update the full feature printer software using this link

Let me know if this works!

Have a great day ahead! :slightly_smiling_face:
