HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g

After changing the yellow ink cartridge, the printer didn’t register a full ink supply.  Tried reinserting the cartridge, turning off the printer, getting another cartridge, etc.  The printer is totally unable to function with this message: “There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP”.  A second screen recommends unplugging the printer and contacting HP Support and provides the web address. But because the warranty is expired, I cannot get any help from HP!  We have searched for all recommendations and have checked everything. The problem still persists.

Hi @KVB6,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue you're facing with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus E-All-In-One Printer regarding the ink system is a common one, and there are a few steps you can take to try to resolve it.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow:

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the printer and remove the yellow ink cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts in the printer.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridge.

Inspect the Ink Cartridges:

  • Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges.
  • Check the cartridges for any physical damage or leaks.
  • Ensure that the protective tape on the new cartridge has been completely removed.

Update the Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues with ink cartridges.
  • Visit the HP support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model.
  • Follow the instructions to update the firmware.

Hard Reset:

  • With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.

Check for Paper Jams and Obstructions:

  • Ensure there are no paper jams or obstructions inside the printer that might be causing the issue.
  • Check all accessible areas of the printer, including the paper tray and the back of the printer.

Reset the Ink System:

  • Sometimes, the printer's ink system can be reset by performing the following:
    • Turn on the printer.
    • Open the ink cartridge access door.
    • Remove all ink cartridges.
    • Close the ink cartridge access door.
    • Wait for the printer to prompt you to install the ink cartridges.
    • Reinstall the ink cartridges one by one.
