I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer. I was printing something and it stopped printing because it stated low or empty cartridges. I purchased new ones ( 4 pack) Blue, magenta, yellow, and black ( 952XL).

Once replaced I received this message on the printer:

"There is a problem with the supply system.

Try replacing the affected cartridge with a different, non-empty, cartridge. If message reappears again, record message and contact HP."

I tried taking out the new cartridges and putting them back input the message just keeps reappearing.

I did cycle the power to the printer but still the same message.

Hi @CLakeman ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is having trouble recognizing the new cartridges or there might be an issue with the supply system. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Check for Cartridge Packaging or Tape:

  • Ensure that the new cartridges are properly installed, and that you’ve removed any protective tape or packaging that might still be on the cartridges.

Inspect the Cartridge Slots:

  • Check the cartridge slots for any debris, dust, or ink residue. Clean the contacts inside the slots and on the cartridges gently using a lint-free cloth or paper towel.

Try Reinstalling the Cartridges:

  • Remove the cartridges again, carefully check for any visible damage or defects on the cartridges, and reinstall them. Ensure they are seated firmly in place.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Leave it unplugged for at least 60 seconds. Plug it back in and power it on again.

Check Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes issues with the supply system can be resolved through a firmware update. You can check and update the firmware through the printer's settings or the HP Smart app.

Try Another Set of Cartridges:

  • If possible, try another set of cartridges, as it’s possible the new cartridges you purchased are defective.

Check for Error Codes:

  • If you get any specific error codes during this process, make a note of them.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
