Refund of ink following printer failure

HP Recommended
HP OfficeJet 3830
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

A thread handling my repeated attempts to solve a printing problem -- several reinstallations and various other procedures followed with no improvement -- was unilaterally closed (i.e. I received "Authentification failed. Authentification Ticket Mismatched, failed authentification." message when I tried to pursue the discussion) when I said I could go no further and asked how my now unusable ink supplies could be refunded.
The last message, to which I was trying to reply referred me to HP support. But this would be a paying service and I'm not ready to pay, when I have a Canon printer that that has lasted many more years than my HP one, which I can resurrect for the price of new ink cartridge.

So I open a new thread to ask this question:
How can I obtain a refund for unopened and unusable HP ink cartridges, please?
