Replaced both print cartridges but printing is spotty. Cleaned and realigned, turn off and on. Message does say "Cartridges are set to default print quality"?

Hi @Lindy7670,

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP printer is producing spotty prints even after replacing both cartridges. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check Ink Levels
On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup → Tools → Estimated Ink Levels to ensure both cartridges have sufficient ink.
Even new cartridges can sometimes be faulty or underfilled.

Use the Printer’s Cleaning Utility
From Setup → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead, run the cleaning cycle.
If print quality doesn’t improve, repeat the cleaning up to three times, allowing the printer to rest for a few minutes between cycles.

Run a Print Quality Report
Go to Setup → Tools → Print Quality Report.
Check if the test page shows streaks, missing lines, or faded areas — this helps identify which color or section is affected.

Ensure Correct Paper Type and Settings
Load plain white paper (A4 or Letter) and make sure the printer settings match the paper type and quality.
If the printer defaults to “Draft” or “Economy” mode, switch to Normal or Best quality for better results.

Check for Protective Tape or Blockage
Remove the cartridges and ensure the orange protective tape covering the ink nozzles is fully removed.
Also, inspect the ink vent (the small slot on top of the cartridge) to ensure it’s not clogged or covered.

Align the Printhead Again
Go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Align Printer and follow the on-screen steps.
Proper alignment ensures the printhead nozzles are correctly positioned for sharp output.

Inspect the Printhead
If cleaning and alignment don’t help, the printhead may be partially clogged.
Gently wipe the underside of the cartridge where the ink comes out using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
Let it dry before reinstalling.

Run a Second Test Print
Print a few full-color pages to help re-prime the cartridges and clear any trapped air inside the ink nozzles.

I hope this helps.
