Serial number not recognized

HP does not seem to recognize my OfficeJet 5740 printer serial number

then,

True -- HP Support concentrates on in-Warranty device support.

Devices not in Warranty, and accessories whether or not they are in Warranty, might NOT show up in the database to sort and detect eligible devices for Warranty Service.

In the case of this printer AND the context, that is, where you are searching for the serial number, there are both reasons why the serial number might not be found and other places when the serial number search would (should?) work as expected.

For example,

When a device is still supported at the product's website homepage, one might expect PartSurfer to respond to a search using the device product number and / or serial number.
