My OfficeJet 4650 shows "Service Station Stalled". Printer makes a grinding sound as well. No problem with carriage moving back & forth. None of the diagnostics nor suggestions work.

Hi @LoriEC77 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are printer is encountering the "Service Station Stalled" error on your HP OfficeJet 4650 printer, accompanied by a grinding sound, it typically indicates an issue with the service station mechanism, which is responsible for tasks such as cartridge maintenance, cleaning, and capping.
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:
- Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 60 seconds. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. Sometimes, a simple power cycle can reset the printer and resolve minor issues.
- Inspect for Obstructions: Check the printer for any paper jams, foreign objects, or debris that may be obstructing the movement of the service station or carriage. Use a flashlight to carefully inspect the printer's interior.
- Manually Move Carriage: Turn off the printer and gently move the carriage manually from one side to the other. Ensure that it moves freely without any obstructions or resistance. If you encounter any resistance, investigate further to identify the cause.
- Clean Service Station: If the service station is accessible, you can try cleaning it. Use compressed air to remove any dust or debris that may be causing the mechanism to stall. Be careful not to touch any sensitive components.
- Reset Printer: Perform a partial or semi-full reset on the printer. This can often resolve software-related issues. Instructions for performing a reset can usually be found in the printer's user manual or on the HP support website.
- Update Firmware/Drivers: Ensure that your printer's firmware and drivers are up to date.
