Exact same problem. Worked fine before I changed the ink... put in Genuine XP (very expensive XL) ink and now I can't clear the error message or get the carriage to move to check the ink cartridges.

@Kvansc,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP printer error 0x6100004a is usually related to a carriage jam or an issue with the printhead. Since you mentioned that the cartridge carriage is not moving manually or automatically, follow these steps to troubleshoot.

Power Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait 3-5 minutes to allow the printer to reset.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  4. Check if the error persists.

Check for Paper Jams

  1. Open the printer cover and check for any jammed paper or debris.
  2. Remove any obstructions carefully.
  3. Ensure the carriage moves freely. If it’s stuck, try gently pushing it side to side.

Remove and Reinsert Ink Cartridges

  1. With the printer on, open the ink cartridge access door.
  2. If possible, gently move the carriage to the center.
  3. Remove all ink cartridges and inspect them for leaks or damage.
  4. Reinsert the cartridges properly and close the door.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Unplug the printer while it is on.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Clean the Printhead (If Applicable)

If your printer has a removable printhead:

  1. Remove the ink cartridges.
  2. Lift and remove the printhead.
  3. Wipe the electrical contacts gently with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  4. Let it dry completely, then reinstall it.

Try a Printer Firmware Update

If your printer connects to the internet, update the firmware:

  • Go to HP Support (support.hp.com)
  • Download and install the latest firmware for your printer model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
